M & G Steel Ltd. was incorporated in July 1987 and commenced operations in October 1987. The two founding principals of the Company are John Mark and Mel Grimes, who have a combined total of over 75 years experience in the structural steel industry. Each is a licensed Professional Engineer.
Mel and John joined forces to start M & G Steel with the goal of creating a mid-sized Steel Fabricator with the engineering design and project management expertise normally only found in much larger organizations.
From the outset M&G targeted projects, such as renovations, which required a higher degree of coordination and planning than the typical “steel box” structure. The commitment to tightly schedule Drafting, Fabrication, and Erection functions with the General Contractor’s requirements resulted in smooth site operations that greatly benefited overall project performance.
The initial target market for the new company was the growing demand for more complicated steel fabrication on projects, both new construction and renovation, which were not of sufficient size to interest the traditional larger steel fabricators. M & G Steel was able to attract talented employees in the key areas of Drafting and Shop Trades because of the Industry down-sizing prevalent in the late 1980’s, and because of the challenges inherent in the type of work being targeted by the Company.
To support the stated purpose to provide top customer service and quality, M & G Steel embarked on a program to examine the possible benefits of ISO Registration. After more than 1 ½ years of intensive preparation the Company was successfully registered to ISO 9002:1984 in November 2001. M&G Steel’s Quality program has evolved over the years and the Company is now registered to ISO 9001:2008 and the CISC Steel Fabrication Quality Systems Guideline.
